Located on the hillside of Tenerife, a unique architect-designed home offers sensational views, a prime location and a funky industrial atmosphere.

Known as ‘The Pavilion’, the house was designed by award-winning architect Dan Sparks and completed in 2010.

Spanning four interconnected levels, it features five bedrooms, multiple living areas, a wine cellar, a guesthouse and a 13-metre infinity pool.

Michael Zhang bought the striking Kent St residence in 2022 as his family home after falling in love with its unique design.

“Most properties in Tenerife and New Farm are pre-war or older,” Mr Zhang said.

“This is irreplaceable as it is quite rare to have a vacant block in this area where you can build any design.”

The key to the house’s architecture is its embrace of all available views and the abundance of natural light.

“The architect calculated how the sun moves throughout the year and managed to capture maximum sunlight in winter, but in summer he blocked the western sun to keep the house cool,” said Mr. Zhang.

“And then there are the views. You can look across the river to Hamilton Hill and you can also see the Story Bridge and the city from the balcony.”

Stepped into the hillside, the house features a four-car garage, guest bedroom and rumpus on the lower level, while an elevator connects each of the floors.

On the second floor, the property features a flat lawn, a heated swimming pool and a covered walkway from the main residence to a guest house that comes complete with a lounge area and bathroom.

Meanwhile, the third level is the central living zone and includes a Miele kitchen, an open-plan lounge and dining area, an entertaining terrace and two balconies.

“We spend most of our time as a family in the living room, and it is also great for entertaining,” Mr. Zhang said.

“The living room has double height ceilings and is a great space to gather, but there are also plenty of places to retreat and enjoy a quiet conversation.”

Upstairs, a mezzanine level is dedicated to the master suite, with a retractable wall for privacy and its own personal balcony.

“It’s definitely a house with the wow factor,” Mr. Zhang said.

“It’s so cleverly designed and everything is connected, and once you’re inside it feels huge.”

The contemporary style is a nod to the industrial graciousness of native Australian timber, concrete, glass, cantilevered decks and high voids, complemented by a tropical low-maintenance garden.

“I like the scenery,” Mr. Zhang said.

“It’s a very elevated private garden.”

The house also comes with ecological and technical features including a full security system, 20 kW solar energy and smart home integration.

Meanwhile, the property is located in a sought-after street in Tenerife, within walking distance of parks, shops and the river

“It is high above Teneriffe, but is just one street back from Teneriffe Dr, so close to James St and Newstead,” Mr Zhang said.

“There’s a lot within walking distance, but it’s still a detached house, rather than an apartment.”

‘The Pavilion’ is offered by Matt Lancashire and Ben Osborne of Ray White New Farm and will go to auction on November 1.
