A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder after a teenager was allegedly stabbed to death near a Sydney high school.
Police believe a 17-year-old boy died from stab wounds to his thigh after a confrontation in a park in Sydney’s northwest about 4.20pm on Monday.
The alleged stabbing took place in a reserve area, close to several high schools and within view of several people walking nearby.
Police said those involved were not from the nearby school and officers maintain it was not a random attack.
A number of female witnesses who were in the park at the time rushed to render aid to the victim.
Paramedics were called to the scene, but the 17-year-old died shortly afterwards.
“It would have been a terribly confronting situation for these people and I can only commend them for their efforts,” Chief Inspector Naomi Moore told reporters.
“It was a potentially dangerous situation they found themselves in, but they didn’t think to go in and render aid.”
‘Unimaginable loss’
NSW Premier Chris Minns offered his condolences to the teenage boy’s family and friends.
“I am deeply saddened by the death of a teenage boy in Rouse Hill and extend my sincere condolences to his family and friends,” he said in a statement.
“It is an unimaginable loss, and the entire community will feel the impact.”
Local federal MP Michelle Rowland said she was deeply saddened by the incident.
“There is no place in our community for these acts of senseless violence, and I know this news will be deeply disturbing to local families,” she said.
The 15-year-old boy has been refused bail and will appear in the children’s court on Tuesday.
