A teenager from South Carolina died only a few days after catching a rare bacterial infection, giving doctors a warning for the symptoms.

Meningococemia, or meningococcal septicemia, is caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria that had entered the teenager’s bloodstream.

Meningococemia, or meningococcal septicemia, is caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria that had entered the teenager’s bloodstream
Burch emphasized that, although aggressively, the disease is unusual and not always fatal.
Symptoms are high fever, severe headache, sensitivity to light, nausea or vomiting. It can also cause a result that does not fade when it is pressed.
“We call it a petechial rash because it looks like broken blood vessels under the skin,” Burch said.
‘It is not a typical result that you would get, say, a viral infection. If you put your finger on it and press very hard, the result stays there. ‘
The Department of Public Health reported 12 cases of the disease in South Carolina for the past 1.5 years, four of which resulted in death.
A spokesperson for DHEC told the outlet: ‘DPH investigates all reported cases of Neisseria meningitidis, looking for possible links. Regarding the 12 cases that spread over the state within 18 months, no ties were found and this does not fit in the definition of an outbreak. ‘
The most effective preventive action against meningococcemia is vaccination, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
