Iga Swiatek‘s run of victories came to a halt MonkAs the world No. 3 was driven out by Denmark in the fourth round Clara Tauson 7-6 (1) 6-3. The upset ended the momentum of Swiateek just when she seemed ready to expand her dominance after the victory in double digits.
Only a few weeks after her impressive Wimbledon triumph, where she beat Tauson 6-4 6-1 comfortably on her way to lifting a sixth Grand Slam trophy, Swiatek seemed in top shape. She had opened her omnium banque national campaign with back-to-back victories, but Tauson, 16th sown, had other plans.
This time the 22-year-old Dane was prepared. Tauson showed much more calm and tactical precision again than in their previous meeting and first released a tense in a tiebreak. Although she did not serve the set at 5-4, she quickly regrets herself and rattled six straight points of 1-1 in the tiebreak to conquer the 7-6 (1).
Tauson drove in that momentum and broke early in the second set. Swiatek fought back and threw the break back to make the score equal, but the Polish star could not keep control. Tauson remained calm under pressure, broke again in the eighth game and full of confidence served the match 6-3.
The loss of Swiatek follows the earlier outputs of Top seeds Coco Gauff, two -time defending champion Jessica Pegula and fourth seed Mirra Andreeva.
After the game, Tauson explained that she was not rattling when Swiatek broke back in the second set, knowing that champions never stop fighting. Instead of getting frustrated, Tauson remained focused and felt confident in her own strategy and game plan.
With this victory, Tauson is switching to the quarterfinals in Montreal, where she will be confronted with American Sixth Seed Madison Keys.
