If you’re looking for some adult fun to kick off the holiday spirit Hilltoplook no further than Taste ‘N’ Tinis.

The annual holiday 21+ event rolls into the community on Thursday, December 11.

Hillcrest Business Association marketing coordinator Natalie Starr said Taste ‘N’ Tinis started in 2009, after the association’s executive director recognized how much the community loved their spring tasting, Flavor of Hillcrest.

“We wanted to bring that same energy to the holidays while also putting a better spotlight on our local stores,” said Starr. “The idea was simple and fun: sip while you shop.”

What started with just 12 participating locations has grown into a neighborhood-wide party with about 25 stops per year, she says.

“In December we celebrate our 16th year and the tradition is growing. Taste ‘N’ Tinis is connected to the association activities Shop Hillcrest for the holiday campaignthat encourages people to support local businesses all season long,” Starr added.

“Every time someone shops at a participating Shop Hillcrest location, they have a chance to win a Hillcrest shopping spree, and Taste ‘N’ Tinis acts as a double entry day.”

According to Starr, most participating stores are also offering exclusive store discounts, making this the perfect opportunity to do some holiday shopping while enjoying mini festive ‘tinis’.

“Restaurants offer seasonal appetizers and typically offer drink specials during the event,” Starr said. “It’s an evening where people can sip, shop, walk and really experience the neighborhood.

“That boost in attendance and engagement translates into increased revenue and long-term visibility for our small businesses, which is exactly why this event was created.”

The HBA welcomes two new businesses set to open in 2025, including Frenchy’s Hideout, offering their famous sangria, and Good News, which will serve non-alcoholic mocktails.

According to Starr, the event is a chance to renew friendships and good times in Hillcrest and also discover some new offerings.

“What guests love most is the sense of discovery,” says Starr. “So many people tell us that they found their new must-try restaurant or boutique during Taste ‘N’ Tinis.

“Between the nightlife, community spirit and unique local businesses, this is the perfect only-in Hillcrest experience.”

Among the area entrepreneurs participating in this year’s event is Patric Stillman, artist and owner of The Studio Door.

The gallery has been part of San Diego’s arts community since 2014 and for the past seven years we have proudly called Hillcrest our home,” said Stillman.

“Taste ‘N’ Tinis is one of those events that reminds us why Hillcrest is such a special place,” he added. “As San Diego’s official entertainment district and the city’s designated LGBTQ cultural district, the neighborhood thrives on connection, celebration and any good excuse to get together.”

Stillman further noted that participating in the event is a great way to open their doors for the holidays.

With a cocktail in hand, guests can satisfy their curiosity about the creative process by speaking directly with the 17 artists working in our studios and browsing affordable, one-of-a-kind pieces at our Holiday Art Market,” said Stillman. “It’s an opportunity to share what we do in a casual, festive setting. The event is a wonderful gateway to new friendships, new collectors and more people discovering the value of visual arts in their own backyard.”

For those who don’t know, Stillman said The Studio Door is a living canvas of creativity that flows into the community.

“Behind every piece on the wall is a real person, a local artist, and a story waiting to be discovered,” Stillman said.

“We are also a nationally certified LGBT Business Enterprise and we are proud to contribute to the vibrant cultural fabric of Hillcrest. Whether you are an art lover, a curious explorer or someone just looking for a touch of inspiration, you will be made very welcome here.”

The Studio Door is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Special events take place during the holidays.

“Any excuse to bring people together around art – we’re in,” Stillman added.

Another business owner looking forward to December 11 is Gioia Marino from Gioia’s room boutique. The company has been part of the Hillcrest community for almost 14 years.

“I have been a proud participant of Taste ‘N’ Tinis for the past twelve years in a row,” said Marino.

“I make it a point to always make my company part of this event and encourage my neighboring companies to participate as well.

As a styling house in the heart of Hillcrest, Gioia’s Room Boutique offers free adjustments with purchase, curated unique styles, handmade accessories from local makers, and personal styling. They also have a touch of previously loved items in the store.

Marino said the event is a great way to promote Hillcrest’s small businesses during the holiday season.

“It is extremely helpful for my boutique because it brings in hundreds of customers (from new customers to returning customers) to me during the event itself,” Marino added.

“Those customers shop during the event and are likely to return in the weeks and months after to shop and get styled in my boutique in the future.”

“Gioia’s Room is a proud participant in all local Hillcrest events, including Taste of Hillcrest, City Fest and countless others,” Marino said. “We have also been known to participate in select events outside our community.”

Whether you’re part of the Hillcrest community or just visiting on December 11, Taste ‘N’ Tinis should spice up your holiday spirit.
