With the Ontario Open Hickory Golf Championship On Whirlpool Golf Course on Saturday 20 September and Sunday 21 September 2025 it is time to sharpen my skills with my Hickory sticks. To achieve this exalted goal, I take more time to practice. In particular, I write my gardens on my non -uncomfortable clubs to understand when I have to touch which club. Because of the manufacturers and age of the clubs, which may seem like a no-brainer 7 iron shot, is actually a challenge because of the different reactions to touching a ball. Anyway, I started my journey and I am excited to see what is happening this year at the Hickory event. Back to how I approach my practice times with my wooden semi -detached golf clubs.
The process is very similar to that of my modern exercise. Unfortunately I don’t have a Driving range close by, so I do during course practice without pressing or keeping someone up. The first step for me was to determine which driver and three wood bring on my journey. I will take a reserve driver with me, but I will probably leave it in my vehicle while I play. That was achieved yesterday and I am convinced that I will be able to touch them relatively well for the two -day event.
Secondly, I stopped at 200 meters and brought out my long irons. This is relatively simple because I don’t have much of it. Regardless of what is on the clubs, I had to determine distances for myself. I was able to limit about half of the clubs. Some are duplicates for distances, but it arouses trust when I understand the distances during my club selection process.
Then I moved up to 150 and 100 meters to complete the same process. It was pretty simple and I am convinced that I get a grip on the distances. The real challenge happens when I get closer because I have different clubs that I like to use to hit the ball on approach shots. And this is where my challenge starts.
I have two clubs (photos to follow) that I like to use 30 to 100 meters. They are both assessed as 9 irons, but have totally different feelings. I can’t give the ball of both clubs, so that’s a wash. At the moment I am thinking of lying. The next time I go out, I will each try out of the rough and out of a tight lie on the fairway. Perhaps this will determine how and where every club should be used. In general, this is a good problem to have and I look forward to solving it.
Finally, I will add a few wraps around the handle of my putter. It is a bit thin because I am used to using a modern grip. I hope that by filling in the handle I can develop a little more touch on 10 foot puts. Again, all this is an exercise and time around the green.
As the time taps closer to my event, I feel that I am better prepared for Hickory Open this year. I am not sure if I will save better, but at least I will be better prepared for this great competition.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
