Livestock farming in southwestern Australia has welcomed the first air raid by Feral Deer of the state.
The state government decided to take a position on the vermin after surveys in the Esperance and Harvey regions revealed a growing number of wild deer.
Cattle farmer Andrew Keep said that he regularly saw groups up to 12 deer jump the fence in his paddock to graze at night.
“They leave a lot of tracks in our muddy paddocks, so I know there is a growing problem,” he said.

Teams of snackers in helicopters fly over certain characteristics, dense bushland and forests, using thermal cameras to spot the deer.
Mr Keep said he was happy that the government took steps to “smear it in the bud” and gave permission for teams to shoot deer when they saw them on his 64-hectare building, east of Harvey.
“If they allow these problems to be festive, it becomes uncontrollable”,
he said.
“Before it’s too late”
Similar flashes of wild deer are common in the eastern parts of Australia, where the population size of the vermin is swollen.
The impact of wild deer on the environment and agriculture by damaging crops, causing soil erosion and competing with indigenous animals and cattle for food.

Primary Industries and Regional Development Department (DPIRD) Manager of vertebrated teasing Tim Thompson said it was important to get on top of the problem before it was “too late”.
“We don’t have nearly near the population of wild deer or the consequences they have in the east, so we’re in a unique situation,” he said.
“[We] I now have the chance to do something before the populations may grow and get bigger and we have the same problems they have in the east.“
Lenschenault Biosecurity Group Executive Officer Kate Duzevich agreed that airculling could be the most humane and cost -effective way to manage the wild deer in the southwest of wa.
She said that early action was vital to avoid the kind of large -scale damage in other parts of the country.
“I believe that this is the most humane, most cost -effective and realistic control tool that can be used in management,” said Mrs. Duzevich.
“If you are busy growing meadows, the physical presence of deer, their hooves on land, the rolling, [is] Harmful productive country. “

Mr Thompson said that the provisional surveys of DPird thermal technology used to determine how widespread WA’s deer population was.
“We know that there is somewhere from one deer per square kilometer to four deer per square kilometer,” he said.
DPIRD estimated around 700 deer in Harvey, with 660 in Esperance and 170 in Muchea, north of Perth.
Are airy spaciousers safe?
Mr Thompson said his team worked with the Ministry of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions to ensure that the air shoots were carried out as safely as possible.
He said that some areas and roads would be closed to the public, similar to how sections were managed during prescribed burns.
“There will be absolutely no risk for people, especially camping and things like that,” he said.
Mr Thompson said that the state government also worked together with native title groups to ensure that no heritage or holy sites would be hit.

Mr Keep said he was not worried about the snipers who flew over his property in search of wild deer.
“The helicopters will be the first in the morning at sunrise when the thermal imaging system can pick up the heating bidding … so that they can clearly identify a deer, pig or even a cow so that they do not shoot deadly cattle,” he said.
“I am pretty sure that if they want it to be successful, they would be very responsible for doing this; otherwise there would be huge blowbacks.”
The RSPCA was contacted for comment on the implications of animal welfare of clearing the air deer, but refused to respond.
