Zimbabwe entered the tournament as underdogs but impressed everyone in the group stage. They remained undefeated, beating Oman and recording a stunning victory over Australia to qualify for the Super Eight. However, they suffered a heavy defeat to West Indies in their opening match for the Super Eight, which seriously damaged their Net Run Rate (-5.350). To qualify for the semi-finals, Zimbabwe must win their remaining two matches against South Africa and India and significantly improve their NRR.

South Africa advanced to the Super Eight undefeated in the group stages and started the second round strongly with a win over India, increasing their NRR to +3,800. If they win both remaining matches, qualification is assured. However, a single win would make them dependent on other results.
