Oman captain Jatinder Singh believes his team has a chance to beat the weak Australian side in the final group stage of the season. 2026 T20 World Cup. Australia have endured a disastrous campaign since the 67-run win over Ireland in their tournament opener, as losses to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in the subsequent matches culminated in an embarrassing group stage elimination – only the second time Australia has suffered such a fate since 2009.
Bottom-placed Oman, meanwhile, has fared even worse, with convincing defeats to Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Ireland. Oman were also defeated by Australia in the only meeting between the two teams, in the 2024 edition. But Jatinder believes this could be the ‘best time to crush them’.
“One hundred percent this is a chance,” Jatinder said before the match in Pallekele. “And our boys are looking forward to it. Because T20 is a game of momentum and moments, and if you play those moments well, you can do anything on that particular day. Things are not going well for Australia at the moment… it is the best time to crush them. The boys are very positive. They are looking forward to the match against Australia to make their mark.”
When asked how Oman could be equipped to compete with stronger teams, Jatinder felt franchise cricket and more playing time could be the methods to “fill the void”. Oman played only 15 T20Is and eight ODIs in 2025.
“Well, if I have to sum it up [how Oman can improve]That would be the case if we allow franchise cricket to take place in the country or if our boys get an opportunity to play franchise cricket elsewhere,” Jatinder said.” I think we can fill that void and they can bring a tremendous amount of experience to our national team.
“But if we don’t start playing competitive cricket, while other teams start playing competitive cricket, we will have to fill that gap. There have been instances where we have invited the teams to come and play in Oman. The response has been very delayed, or we don’t get any response. So I think if we have the franchise cricket, that would really fill the gap.”
