Szoboszlai rejects ‘Gerrard season’ tag: ‘Write my own story’

Dominik Szoboszlai has dismissed claims of a “Steven Gerrard season” after another goal in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Brighton – as he writes his own story.

Szoboszlai scored 10 goals for the season with an excellent strike in Saturday’s FA Cup win at Anfield to confirm himself as Liverpool’s second top scorer.

It was a campaign of heroics from a midfielder wearing number 8, which understandably drew comparisons to Gerrard.

That was the case during TNT Sports’ broadcast of the match, but when asked about playing a ‘Gerrard season’ in his post-match interview, Szoboszlai dismissed the tag.

“I’m not actually playing a Steven Gerrard season,” he insisted.

“Although he was a legend for the club, I try to tell my own story. I try to do my best every game and hopefully we can continue until the end.”

Whether he likes it or not, there are clear similarities with Gerrard, not least his action-oriented style, while his ability to shine in any position – including at right-back – is particularly impressive.

Mohamed Salah stood next to him on the Anfield pitch after the match and praised Szoboszlai as “one of the best players in the world right now.”

“I think it will depend on his performance!” Salah said this when asked whether Liverpool can go all the way in the FA Cup.

“We rely on him a lot this season, he is one of the best players in the world at the moment and I hope he can continue like this.

“But again, it’s great to win trophies, it’s good for everyone and hopefully we can do it again.”

Arne Slot was asked about Salah’s ‘best in the world’ claim during his post-match press conference and replied: “I think there are many footballers from very good to elite football in the world, but I absolutely agree with Mo that Dominik is one of them.”

“Dominik is a great example of the model we use at this club,” he added later.

“We bring young players from another league, in this situation it was Leipzig.

“He was already known as a player who was very physical, but I think it’s fair to say that the player we brought in was already good, but where he is now is much better.

“That’s what you get when you sign young players, give them some time and let them play a lot.

That’s why I think the trajectory he has gone through is the same as what we can expect from other young players we have signed from other leagues.”
