Dominik Szoboszlai’s Real Madrid dream: a quick look
• Madrid Lure: Hungary boss Marco Rossi claims to play for Real Madrid has been Szoboszlai’s ‘only dream’ since childhood.
• Anfield future: Despite the claims, contract talks have reportedly progressed to keep the midfielder at the club Liverpool after 2028.
• Own story: Szoboszlai recently declined Steven Gerard comparisons, insisting he wants to write his own legacy as a Rode.
Szoboszlai’s exceptional season continued on Saturday night, with Liverpool’s number 8 scoring a brutal goal in the 3-0 win at home to Brighton.
The 25-year-old was easily the Reds’ best player in the 2025/2026 season. He scored ten goals, shone in several positions and arguably became a world-class player.
Liverpool are understandably keen to keep Szoboszlai, but are speaking to WinWin (via Marking), Rossi spoke about the idea of him sealing a move to Madrid.
“Because of the very close and direct relationship I have had with Dominik Szoboszlai since he started playing football as a child, Real Madrid has always been his dream,” said Rossi.
“Since he started playing football, Dominik has had only one dream: to play for Real Madrid.
“I don’t know if he will be able to take that step because the decision depends on him and also on his club.
“The idea that you always think about is to fulfill your dream and make it a reality, and from my point of view that is the only and most important thought that can dominate Dominik’s mind.
“However, I do not rule out that he stays at Liverpool and extends his contract there, especially because he is highly valued within the club.

“He is a very important player for Liverpool and Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
Szoboszlai has been a joy to watch for Liverpool this season and extending his contract beyond 2028 should be a priority in the coming months.
Dominik Szoboszlai debunks Steven Gerrard’s comparisons
Szoboszlai’s action-packed performances have naturally seen him compared to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, but he was quick to quash those comparisons after the Brighton match.
“I’m not actually playing a Steven Gerrard season,” Szoboszlai insisted.
“Although he was a legend for the club, I try to tell my own story. I try to do my best every game and hopefully we can continue until the end.”
At 25, the Hungarian is entering his prime and is one of the best midfielders in Europe, so losing him would be a crippling blow.
The appeal of Madrid is great for many footballers, as Trent Alexander-Arnold proved last season, but hopefully Szoboszlai sees his future at Anfield.
There have been no credible links regarding a switch, which can only bode well, and he has said “progress” has been made on a new deal, despite “no decision” having been made yet.
Szoboszlai is a potential heir to Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool’s next captain, and he has the talent and drive to become a future Reds legend.
