Almost half of the employees under the age of 30 achieved at least one work stop in 2024, according to the last Malakoff Humanis Barometer. A worrying situation, linked to psychological problems.

Would absence at work be a youth disease? According to the last annual Barometer of Malakoff Humanis, this Thursday, June 5, 49% of the assets younger than 30 years of age, at least one sick leave, published in 2024, or 7 points above the average of the employees and 12 points above that of 50 and older. Although one in five young people is unemployed in 2025 (almost three times more than the total of the population), the young employees who are absent take more short stops (one to three days), but keep a strong attachment at work, this study notes.

This barometer, carried out in January 2025 with a representative sample of 400 business managers and 3000 employees in the private sector, it appears that for all employees – such as for all employees – normal disease remains the first reason to stop work (44% under the youngest and 40% for all assets). Psychological disorders are in the second position. After jumping during the cavid period, the number of stops is maintained at a high level for this reason, but it increases for those younger than 30. In 2024, 22% of them had at least one stop linked to psychological disorders. It is still 6 points than in 2019.

Telephotoic, much -praised but source of isolation

“The start of a professional career sometimes turns out to be a difficult passage for some young people”Adds Malakoff’s study. So 66% of young employees say they have one “Stressful job”Against only 54% of all employees. More than one in two young people even explains that they are professionally exhausted, a figure of 7 points since 2020. The world of work does indeed include “High expectations” For the youngest. The work requirement is even the first professional reason mentioned (37%) for stops for psychological disorders among young people.

Teleworking, praised by young people, is considered essential (37% use it in 2024, compared to 23% in 2020), because it makes a better reconciliation between private and work possible. Paradoxically, it is also a source of insulation for 23% of them, signals the research and can cause increased pressure. Asked about the actions to reduce sickness absence, 29% of young employees believe that “The company could reduce or reorganize the workload” (Against 23% for all employees).

This barometer also emphasizes the situation of the most vulnerable categories of the population, more affected by sick leave. So 52% of employees with a disability and 51% of care providers who provide one of their family members were prescribed at least one sick leave in 2024, against 42% for all employees. Certain sectors are also affected more than others due to absenteeism at work, including health, construction and industry. Stops are also more numerous in companies with between 10 and 49 employees (50%) than in companies with 1000 or more employees (38%), Malakoff Humanis notes.
