“Of course my motivation to follow this year’s tournament is closely linked to the fact that it is happening on a home floor – and that a strong run of Switzerland can create something very special,” says Loutenbach, who hopes to get to the final in Basel if he is able to secure some tickets. “But I am also fully aware of the incredible opportunity that this tournament offers to see some of the best players in the world.

“I will watch one game alone, another with my girlfriend, and a third with friends who usually do not attend football matches. In my opinion, women’s football attracts a completely different audience.”

He looked at a few games of the 2022 ladies -euros and 2023 World Cup on television, where the last one saw the Swiss ladies team emulate the men and lose to Spain in the knockout rounds of a big tournament. Regarding whether an impressive run could bring a new, dedicated fan base at the euro? “Absolutely – I’m the best example of that!” he says. “It can certainly create a new momentum within the fan base and inspire young girls who want to pursue their passion for the game.”
