Football fans who have watched the Euro 2020 match between Switzerland and France may remember the sight of Luca Loutenbach’s emotional reactions to the Swiss Comback
Four years ago, the Swiss football fan Luca Loutenbach unexpectedly became famous at night for his parties during the euro victory of his country in France. His emotions have encapsulated the pain and ecstasy of Voetbalfandom, while the Vladimir Petkovic team scored two late goals to bring the match extra time before getting a dramatic penalty shoot-out.
Loutenbach, who was 28 at the time, was rewarded with a flight to the quarterfinals of Switzerland against Spain in St. Petersburg, where the ‘Nati’ could not fully repeat the trick. This year he has not to travel that far.
Switzerland organizes the European Championships for Women, where the host country has given itself every chance to reach the quarterfinals. Loutenbach is not so enthusiastic a fan of women’s football, but the prospect of a tournament in front of his door has seen him attract the colors of his country and show his support – and he tells Mirror football There are still people who remember those iconic photos from four years ago.
“Yes, it [getting recognised] Still happening from time to time in Switzerland, “he says.” I probably underestimated how much that game has remained in people’s memories … I can’t lie: I really appreciate being associated with a happy moment for my country – I feel a very strong bond and I am incredibly grateful that I grew up there. “
Loutenbach lives what he describes as a very Swiss life, working in the banking sector and lives in a small town for about 45 minutes outside of Basel. One of his most important love is his local ice hockey team, HC Ajoie, but he still makes time to follow the national team of men abroad and has now had the opportunity to support his support for women.

“Of course my motivation to follow this year’s tournament is closely linked to the fact that it is happening on a home floor – and that a strong run of Switzerland can create something very special,” says Loutenbach, who hopes to get to the final in Basel if he is able to secure some tickets. “But I am also fully aware of the incredible opportunity that this tournament offers to see some of the best players in the world.
“I will watch one game alone, another with my girlfriend, and a third with friends who usually do not attend football matches. In my opinion, women’s football attracts a completely different audience.”
He looked at a few games of the 2022 ladies -euros and 2023 World Cup on television, where the last one saw the Swiss ladies team emulate the men and lose to Spain in the knockout rounds of a big tournament. However, this year there may be a change for revenge for revenge, where the Pia Sundhage team only needs a point of their last group game to possibly set up a rematch with a Spain side that entered the tournament as one of the favorites.
Loutenbach acknowledges the efforts to grow the women’s game in recent years, and believes that this tournament could help bring things to a different level. “The Swiss football federation has certainly invested a lot in the last five years to develop the women’s game,” he says.
“But I still have the feeling that there is much to do in the field of youth development and infrastructure. This tournament can be a real boost!”
Regarding whether an impressive run could bring a new, dedicated fan base at the euro? “Absolutely – I’m the best example of that!” he says. “It can certainly create a new momentum within the fan base and inspire young girls who want to pursue their passion for the game.”
