Terriers broke a 1-1 draw with four unanswered goals and raced away from #10/11 BC 5-1 to complete a weekend series sweep at Conte Forum. BU scored a pair of shorthanded goals, including the first of two freshmen games Ben Merrill.

Captain Gavin McCarthy scored the game winner and added an assist while his defense partner, Cole Hutsonset up two goals with accurate passes. Jack Harveywho scored and provided an assist for the other shortie, continuing his strong second half for BU.

GOAL Mikhail Yegorov was a highlight, stopping 28 shots while allowing one goal for the second night in a row. The big sophomore kept BU in the game in the opening period as they were shut out 13-5 in what coach Jay Pandolfo called “his best weekend of the year.” He saved 52 of 54 shots over the two games.

With the six-point weekend, BU is in sixth place in the Hockey East Standingsjust one point behind Maine. Both teams have one game left in the regular season. Terrier will have to get past the Black Bears to avoid playing in the opening round of the conference tournament.

The sweep was BU’s first against the Eagles since January 27-28, 2023. BU Hockey Stats reported that “For the first time in program history, an unranked BU records a weekend sweep of a top-10 ranked BC.”

If the Terriers were looking for a start similar to Friday night’s, they got the exact opposite. Brandon Svoboda took a penalty in the opening minutes and Yegorov had to make four saves to keep the match scoreless. The Eagles ran the game, dominating the clock and shooting into the O-zone, which at one point was 8-1.

After a second Terrier penalty, BC managed just one shot, while BU produced its eighth shorthanded goals of the season. McCarthy collected a puck behind the BU cage and directed a long pass to Merrill behind the Eagle defense. He skated to the slot and hit a shot on that beat Louka Cloutier high to the glove side for his fifth goal of the season.

The 1-0 lead lasted only five minutes. A turnover from the BU defensive zone landed on James Hagens’ stick and he quickly found Oscar Jellvik in the right post for the equalizer.

BU flipped the script early in the second period and held a 7-1 lead through the first ten minutes. At 2:40, the Terriers turned a faceoff in the O-zone into a goal. Tynan Lawrence won the puck cleanly from Hutson, who skated from the left point to the right and then sent a pass between the defenders to McCarthy at the bottom of the left circle. His shot from an acute angle beat Cloutier through the five hole for his third goal of the season and a 2-1 lead.

Midway through the period, Yegorov made perhaps his best save, stoning Hagen on a breakaway.

A penalty held by McCarthy in the final minutes of the second period allowed BU to regain the penalty kill to start the third. With twenty seconds left on BC’s man advantage, Aiden Celebrini moved the puck out of the zone, allowing Harvey and Kamil Bednarik on a 2-on-1. Harvey dropped the puck to a trailing Hutson and then delivered a one-time return pass for his 12th goal and third short-hander. The junior wing has scored goals in each of the last three games.

With six minutes to go, Yegorov took the lead again, denying Hagens a 2-on-1 attempt with a short hand.

A minute later Merrill grabbed a Charlie Trethewey outlet pass in the neutral zone, sped around an Eagle defender and shot just under the crossbar on the blocker’s side, for his first multi-goal play and a 4–1 Terrier lead. Jonathan Morello got the second assist.

Now that Cloutier was looking for an extra attacker, Cole Eiserman‘s empty goal, assisted by Bednarik and Harvey, completed the scoring.
