Swimming: Summer McIntosh talks ‘great’ Bob Bowman training and target times

Despite being only 19 years old, McIntosh is already a three-time world record holder in the 400 free, 200 IM and 400 IM.

But the Toronto native won’t be able to rest on past achievements.

While many athletes are reluctant to reveal their target times, McIntosh is happy to share her goals, such is her confidence and focus on achieving them.

“I want the world record of two (hundred) butterflies. I definitely want to reach 1:52 in the 200 free at some point. In the other events I want to continue to shave the time of the world records, and in the 800 free I want to get 8:04 or faster.”

One person who could have helped McIntosh achieve some of these goals is Australia’s Ariarne Titmus.

The four-time Olympic gold medalist and 200 free world record holder formed a fascinating three-way rivalry with McIntosh and Katie Ledecky that fans were keen to see reach a final at the 2028 Olympic Games in LA, before surprising the swimming world by ending her career last month.

Desperate to test herself against one of the GOATs, McIntosh quickly showed her appreciation for Titmus and all her achievements in the sport.

“She was absolutely incredible, and she’s always been such an inspiration to me in the two free, four free and eight free, and every time I raced her she always put up a great fight and she always pushed me to be better myself,” McIntosh said.

“She has achieved everything she wanted and it is great to see her starting this new chapter in her life. I would like to congratulate her on her great career.”
