There are horses who win with a minimum of hassle, and others, such as Sweet William, who have a style that is all of themselves, and the residence of John & Thady Gosden kept it interesting in the Doncaster Cup on Friday, while he wins a slow start and an early coaxing of Rab Havlin in his Saddle winning the group for the second year.
Sweet William often seemed to have his own ideas about the racing game during a career in 20 race, with slow starts and flat spots in the middle of the race that Havlin often forced to be busy at an early stage.
However, when he eventually goes through the gears, he is a very difficult horse to stay outside the frame, and although his last victory was his first since the same race 12 months ago, his fourth place in this year’s Ascot Gold Cup was the only time he had been outside the first three. His strike rate for every racers is 85%.
Sweet William was bumped and left the stalls, took a few steps to find his balance and was then driven by Havlin to come up with the lost ground before approaching himself at the back of the field. And there he stayed home until he left the bend when Havlin stored him for a ruthless running straight run that wore almost four lengths on the line.
Havlin is a long-term no. 2 at the Gosden Stable, but he is the only jockey that Sweet William has driven and he thanked Philippa and Nick Cooper, the owners of De Ronde, for their loyalty after the sixth career success of the collaboration. “Loyalty can be a dirty word in this game, but they have been incredible to me,” said Havlin. “There is no good or wrong way to drive him. He is a real character, but he has a lot of ability.”
There are a potential group one target for Sweet William in the coming weeks, but afterwards John Gosden suggested that the Coopers have already decided to plan a return to Town Moor instead.
“Philippa wants to go on a high and we will build on the Doncaster Cup through a few interesting races next year,” said Gosden. “They are great, these cup horses, and people enjoy it. They are exciting for the crowds because many of our flat horses disappear too quickly.”
An impressive representation of raw, front running speed caused the most important supporting race on the map as Tim Easterby’s Revival Power, a sister of the group of the stable a winning winter power, led two Flying Children Stakes everywhere in the group.
“She is a natural leader and she has kicked that little bit,” said Easterty. “She will certainly improve three.”
Lambourn to complete Derby army Double
Only seven runners go to the St Army in Doncaster on Saturday, the last classic of the flat campaign, but it is a race with real depth in terms of quality and sees the first appearance of a derby winner in this historic competition since Camelot’s envy failure to land the triple crown in 2012.
Camelot was inevitably a red -hot favorite when he succumbed to Encke with three -quarters of a length 13 years ago. However, Lambourn is only a second favorite for the army behind Scandinavia, a stable companion on the Yard Aidan O’Brien, even though he took the Epsom classic with nearly four lengths in June before he was followed three weeks later in Irish equivalent.
If Lambourn was sent directly to the army after his victory in the Curragh, he would certainly lead the market, but he was far below his best when he fifth, at tense foot, in the Great Volieur Stakes in York last month in York, while Scandinavia can have an eight-length victory in the Bahrain Trofee and a group group.
The race on Saturday, however, is far from a competition of two horses, since Paddy Twomey’s Carmers stood in front of Scandinavia when he was successful in the vase of the queen at Royal Ascot, and about two lengths for Lambourn then second in De Voliteeur.
All seven runners have in fact a glimpse of a Chance of the 40-1 outsider, Rahiebb, was within a length of Carmers at Royal Ascot but Lambourn was a convincing derby winner only three months ago and looked very much as if the race would bring him when he was defeated in York.
He is also completely not exposed to 14 Furlongs and a strongly traveling Galoper who could improve well for the step traveling. Scandinavia and Carmers will offer a strong opposition, but Lambourn (3.40) Rand in recent days ever close to the top of gambling and still looks reasonably priced at about 5-2.
Doncaster 1.15 An easier soil could be what Treble T -shirt Must return to winning form after excellent efforts in the defeat during his last two starts.
Doncaster 1.50 Gain Showed a good attitude to retain its unbeaten record in York last month and is closely preferred to Oxagon, a winner with a wide margin previous time-out.
Chester 2.05 There is little to choose between Hamish, the warm favorite, and Military academy On their form in Goodwood in June, so a swing of 3 pounds in favor of the gelding of John & Thady Gosden makes him a logical choice on the likely opportunities.
