After decades of dissolute and an undisturbed number of conceptions, partygoers of Burning Man celebrated a rare birth in Black Rock City on Wednesday morning, after a festival visitor unexpectedly gave birth on the Playa.
“It’s one Absolutely miracle”Said the new father Kasey, 39, from Salt Lake City, who asked that only the first names of the family are used to protect their privacy.” I had known [about the pregnancy]That is the absolute last place on this planet that I would have been. ”
His wife Kayla, 36, had no symptoms and did not show when she suddenly went into their camper in their camper just before dawn, the new father said. Doctors believe that baby Aurora was shy of her expiry date for about a month when she arrived minutes later, with a weight of just over three and a half pounds.
“I just started screaming for everyone to help me,” Kacey recalled by tears. ‘We had one within a few minutes [obstetrician]A Nicu nurse, a pediatrician there – I don’t know where they all came from, they just came. ‘
As lucky, a dream team of medical professionals had thrown their camp just next door. The midwife was still in his underwear when he and the Ersatz Labor and delivery team clambed to take care of the newborn and her mother, who screaming at clean blankets, saline solution and other medical emergencies in the dusty and mud-wrapped camp.
The family was transported to the official medical tent of the festival, where mother Kayla held her little naked daughter against her bare chest while she waited for a helicopter to take her to a neonatal intensive care in Reno. They took the key decision to send Aurora alone after she heard that there was no room for both parents to travel with her.
“The medical staff at Burning Man grabbed me and just hugs me and said he won’t leave her out of sight,” said Kacey. “He kept reassuring me, she will be fine.”
But the Odyssey of the family just started. The ride to Reno lasted hours. Kayla was treated on Thursday and released from the hospital. But Baby Aurora stays in the Nicu and could experience a long stay, Family said.
“Because this is their first child and the pregnancy was completely unexpected, my brother and his wife did not prepare anything – no baby supplies, no children’s room, nothing at all,” wrote the aunt Lacey Paxman of the baby in one Gofundme Appeal For the family.
“Most people get nine months to prepare,” she said. “They became parents in an instant.”
For now the family is stranded in Reno, although they hope that Baby Aurora will be transported to a hospital closer to home.
“She’s just going to illuminate my air,” Kacey said about the fragile newborn, which he held for the first time on Friday. “She will be everything.”
Surprising deliveries are unusual, but far from unheard, experts say. About 1 in 500 pregnant women discovers that they are expected for more than 20 weeks – a phenomenon known as ‘cryptic pregnancy’.
Cryptic pregnancies are more common among very young mothers, as well as those who may have other health problems that mask pregnancy symptoms, such as nausea, exhaustion and even missed periods. Just like the Kayla, a subset of such parents only discovers that they are pregnant when they give birth.
“It was definitely 100% a cryptic pregnancy,” said Kacey. “No signs, no morning sickness. She wasn’t even shown.”
Pregnant women, young children and even babies are a regular feature of the Nine Days Burning Man Festival, which attracts tens of thousands of people every year to an abandoned strip of the Nevada desert, about 120 miles north of Reno.
Yet births are almost unheard of at the celebration of “community, art, self -expression and self -reliance.” Some old burners have called Aurora ‘Citizen Zero’.
Her unexpected arrival took place only a few hours after a white-out Dust Storm Ground Incoming traffic came to a halt when festival visitors came in and tried to camp on Monday.
The dramatic weather reminded memories that in 2023 flooded the camp and thousands stranded in deep, sticky mud. More bad weather is expected at the weekend.
“It’s a miracle, because the weather was crazy,” said Paxton. “If she had arrived earlier or two or two or two later, they couldn’t have gotten her.”
