When Marty Supreme (2025) was released in December and quickly attracted attention. Timothee Chalamet’s portrayal of Marty Mauser, a table tennis star loosely based on American great Marty Reisman, helped this film gain buzz and receive numerous accolades and awards. The film has nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (formerly Timothee Chalamet). The other awards are for original screenplay, cinematography, editing, production design and costumes. In addition to the Oscars, the film has also been recognized with Gold Globe nominations, Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Critics Choice Awards.

Table tennis fans have invested more than most in this success. We have seen over the years that when our sport is featured in a movie or show (Forest Gump, Balls of Fury, Friends, The Office, Big Bang Theory, etc.), our clubs often see an increase in interest. With the MLTT professional competition kicking off in the US and the number of scheduled events increasing as we prepare for the 2028 Olympics, Marty Supreme may have more of an impact than the other events.

Keen-eyed fans may notice US Olympian Nikhil Kumar and former world No. 1 Timo Boll, who both made cameo appearances in the film (pictured above). Much of the table tennis community came together to support the film, with scenes shot in New York and London with real players in the background to increase the realism and make the film something special.
