The Nigeria Super Eagles sent a sincere message of support to Taiwo Awoniyi after the Nottingham Forest striker had undergone an emergency operation after a serious abdominal injury.
The 27-year-old sustained the injury during Sunday’s Premier League match against Leicester City. In the 88th minute he clashed with the goal post while trying to make contact with a cross by Anthony Elanga during the 2-2 draw on the city.
Awoniyi, who had just come as a replacement for Ibrahim Sangare, was treated on the field and continued to play, but clearly had pain.
Responding to the news of his operation, the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Super Eagles shared an image and message of encouragement for the striker. Read the message:

The message is widely praised by fans who appreciated the show of love and unity of the national team.
Nottingham Forest confirmed in an official statement:
“The club can confirm that Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone an urgent operation after a belly injury sustained during Sunday’s game against Leicester City.”
“Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. The club will offer further updates if necessary.”
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis also responded to the situation and said that his decision to get to the field on the entire field was partly due to frustration about how the injury was managed.
“Everyone – the coaching staff, players, fans and myself – was upset about Taiwo’s injury and the judgment of the medical team about whether he should continue to play,” Marinakis posted on Instagram.
“It shows the passion we all feel for the club.”
Awoniyi, who came to Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022, was previously in the books of Liverpool from 2015 to 2021, but did not appear a senior performance.
This season he scored one Premier League goal for Forest and remains a key figure in the plans of Nigeria prior to the upcoming international competitions.
