EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Super Duper Cooper has not been very popular with his friends lately, like the talented gelding son of EL Titan-Pink Power tasted defeat in each of his last two running races as the favorite heading into Friday night’s $17,500 high-end conditioned trot at The Meadowlands.
Surprisingly, after his few failures at odds of 2-1, the 5-year-old was put on at 3-5, and recovered with a superior effort to take his 13.e victory from 54 lifetime starts.
“He rode great last week, it’s never easy to achieve a :54.4 half,” said winning driver Brett Beckwith of ‘SDC’, who finished second to Finite that evening. “But this week he recovered.”
Super Duper Cooper alertly left the starting gate from post 6 in the nine-horse field and made a four-hole trip as Full Of Muscles reached the field past the quarter in:27.1 and half in:56.2. SDC left the rail at that point and started racing uncovered on the edge, even shooting past Full Of Muscles at three-quarters, which went in 1:26.
SUPER DOOPER COOPER REPEAT
Rico Robinson’s trainee was now in top gear, opening an insurmountable lead over his foes at half-way, before cooling his jets slightly near the wire, and swung to a three-quarter victory over a late surging Interview Fra A. High Speed Swan came third in an impressive display.
“As soon as he stood up straight [in the stretch]’, he exploded home,” said Beckwith, who was somewhat concerned that his horse had provided a live tow for Interview Fra A in the last half mile. “In that group they are all talented animals, [Interview Fra A] was good, but mine dug in right down to the thread.
Super Duper Cooper, owned by Pollack Racing LLC, increased its lifetime earnings to $443,882. He paid $3.40 to win after completing the mile in 1:53, just a fifth of a second slower than his lifetime best.
A LITTLE MORE: The Colin Kelly-driven Girl Almighty held off the Beckwith-driven Miss You Joann in the 14e and the final race of the evening, with Kelly taking victory in the race for the night driving award, beating Beckwith by five wins to four. … Per Engblom led the trainers with two walks in victory lane. … A modest transfer of $1,380 led to a total pot of just under $10,000 in the 20-cent Pick-6, and after a series in which the odds for the winner were 3-5, 5-1, 4-1, 2-1, 7-5 and 2-1, those with winning tickets collected $1,838.18. … All bets on the 14-race schedule totaled $2,871,649. … Racing resumes Saturday at 6:20 p.m. … This week is the second of four with racing on Sunday.
