We are far removed from watching the Phoenix Suns that play basketball – at the beginning of October – and the franchise apparently tries to get more selection before the action returns to court. Jonathan Kuminga from the Golden State Warriors that are apparently available for a price that the Suns could still reach, even if the Warriors do not seem to entertain interest now.

The schedule is already largely made again around Superstar Devin Booker, with no fewer than three rookies all a few minutes. Early indications suggest that Koby Brea will be the young person who contributes the fastest, after he has had some burning summer competitions that this veteran looked over his shoulder.

Suns Slate of Presseason competitions include a trip to China.

With the calendar at the point to turn to August and the real dog days of the low season almost on us, the Suns dropped their preseason -run from competitions that start on 3 October against the Los Angeles Lakers. For the confusion of fans, the team announced four games to be played against only two opponents, in the Lakers and Brooklyn Nets.

The decision to play the nets twice in Macao in China also raised some eyebrows, but it makes sense if you think about it for a number of reasons. This is an opportunity for the Suns to grow their brand in a monster market – and although Booker may not seem as popular as in the past seasons – he is still a huge attraction abroad.

This also applies to his sneakers – and although fans often regret that these distant places go for reasons other than basketball – they are commercial companies that are fruit. Doing this against the nets is also a smart move, because they are not good to be very good next season and so head coach Jordan Ott has the chance to build some momentum as a group away from home.

The most enigmatic aspect of all this is playing the nets for the second time on a Sunday and 48 hours later against the Lakers in Arizona. That is a team that will have a chip on their shoulder, and you can bet that a new Lean Luka Doncic will take the opportunity to put together a weaker Suns selection with which he has played in the past.

That kind of quick change mimics the more difficult pieces of the regular season, but is it really necessary? It is still exciting to know that Suns’ basketball is on the horizon again, and at a time when the fan base is firmly aside again after the departure of Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal. Who knows, Kuminga may even be along for the ride by the time the group hits China.
