The Phoenix Suns had many striking needs to fill this season, and that was before they exchanged Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal. With both boys who have now disappeared, the Front Office has actually done a good job by adding some youth and tap choices around Devin Booker, while at least they tackle their two biggest needs positions.

The middle place needed a lot of love, and the valley got that in Kaman Maluach and Mark Williams. The addition of Williams in particular is a risk of obvious reasons, but you must admire the organization at least to do something about it. Then there is the Point Guard position, which currently has a depth card from Jalen Green (supposedly), Collin Gillespie and another to decide.

Letting Monte Morris run for nothing was a strange decision.

It is no secret that Tyus Jones really struggled in Phoenix last season, and it was no surprise to see him run away and go to the Orlando Magic on the first opportunity. But if you thought Jones had his struggles – and he started coming from a starter to the bank as the season progressed – saving a thought for Monte Morris.

He was limited to just 45 games and 12.7 minutes a night, even though he was clearly a better defender than Jones. Really although Morris never got an extensive chance to prove that he earned more run, even though he didn’t really do something wrong every time he was on the field. Just like everyone else, he raised the ball Durant and Devin Booker and got out of the way.

That makes the decision to let Jordan Goodwin and Jared Butler expand it for the third string place and not to bring Morris that astonishing. This was more logical when the franchise was still in the second apron, but that is no longer the case. Morris also does not remain signed, and at the age of 30 would be the experienced voice needed on a selection that suddenly looks a lot younger.

It is also not as if Morris is particularly weak in a certain area, since he can defend something and carefully takes care of the ball. He is not an elite 3-point shooter and there is not even a certain go that he has when he also drives to the paint. But everything about him is solid and would have been useful in Phoenix on the way to a season in which they won’t win many games.

If the previous coaching staff had decided that they were on him, it would have been one thing, but new head coach Jordan Ott could do with older boys who have experience to act as his voice on the field. It seems strange to Morris to leave for Nul Fanfare – and also not to stay signed up to this point – but there is no doubt that he could have helped the suns next season.
