Suns fans are still laughing at the heat to pass on Devin Booker

The Phoenix Suns had a tough low season, but it was also necessary because they look at it again to rebuild Devin Booker. Both Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal have disappeared, where the franchise did not go on a deep play -off run when both were in the valley. The team also has a new head coach in Jordan Ott, who will be the fourth in Four Seasons for Booker.

So although there is so much uncertainty around the franchise, we let ourselves be taken back to the NBA design of 2015, when the Suns was saved by the addition of Booker with the 13th Pick. He was considered more a role player who had been exactly that in his only season with Kentucky, while he proved with Team USA at the 2024 Olympic Games that he can return to it when needed.

But with the Miami Heat on the clock with the 10th Pick, they chose to take Justise Winslow from Duke, so booker was left on the board for the Suns to finally take. The next two choices after that Center Myles Turner were to the Indiana Pacers (certainly worked out), and then Trey Lyles to the Utah Jazz (not so much, although they also had Gordon Hayward).

That is why it is the heat that looks the most foolish because they have not seen what booker would be. Winslow played for the last time in the NBA in 2023, and was one of the more overwhelming lottery choices of the last decade compared to both the expectations for him and the fact that he went to a franchise in the heat that these picks spine so often.

Also worth remembering is the fact that the heat had only been removed from their most recent championship for two years and still had a veteran heavy team. We now know that Booker would have been the perfect bridge between an exciting future, but he could also have helped the stars such as Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh immediately by replicating his Kentucky role.

Mario Chalmers, Luol Deng and Joe Johnson also had that selection, but there is one name that stands out more than from a Phoenix perspective. Suns’ Great Amar’e Stoudemire was also on South Beach at that time. Imagine that those two were cooperating there, instead of both of all time, the big ones of Suns in their own rights. The Suns may struggle now, but this will never be funny.
