The Washoe County Prosecutor’s Office released a notice statement about Tonar and illegally pocketing the proceeds leading up to his arrest.
The statement said officers from the Sparks Police Department were called to the location of Tonar’s employer in 2025 amid speculation that he was stealing money. CCTV video subsequently confirmed that Tonar had taken money from multiple Dotty’s Casino office locations.
“Detectives from the Sparks and Reno Police Departments worked together on the case and discovered that the suspect had embezzled from six different locations, taking a total of $714,713.59,” the prosecutor’s office said.
The man had attempted to flee the state with the proceeds of his ongoing theft and was later arrested by police.
“Tonar then drove out of the state and into California,” the press release stated. “He was arrested a few days later at a Sacramento motel during a joint law enforcement operation. A search of his belongings recovered $677,069 of the stolen money and three guns.”
Tonar’s sentence was handed down by Presiding Judge Barry Breslow for four counts of embezzlement of $100,000 or more, and two counts of embezzlement of less than $100,000.
The total sentence for Tonar was reportedly between eight and thirty years in prison.
In related news surrounding a casino robbery, three people were arrested following a coercive hotel room crime. The man and two women were charged multiple times with intimidation and threatening the life with a knife against a patron at Bally’s Twin River resort.
