British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba had data in all age groups, while Alberta, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island only provided data for people aged 65 and older. Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia do not follow these records in a federal database.
The aim of the research is to make the overwhelming gap in opioid recipes aware and to encourage caregivers to find other solutions to ensure that all communities are treated equally and effectively.
“Pharmacists are an essential part of the primary care team,” said Alsabbagh. “They can provide rules on individual regulations, suitable doses for each patient, inform policy decisions to tackle inequalities and connect patients with supporting services, if necessary.”
By one Report of the federal governmentCanada on average 67 visits in the first aid, 15 hospital admissions, 99 emergency reactions and 20 deaths per day as a result of opioid-related incidents in 2024.
