Stopping the ball on the putting green

Stopping the ball on the putting green

For many amateurs, ‘one hop stop’ while chipping is just a dream. The challenge is to develop enough spin to control the ball very quickly. Once you master this skill, your ability to be aggressive while hunting pins will grow exponentially. Over the years I have developed the one hop stop skill somewhat, but I wouldn’t say I have fully mastered this skill. That’s why I’m still working on ways to improve my short game in this way. I came across some advice that I think might be helpful to anyone working on this short game skill.

The premise for hitting a short chip or throw that generates backspin is quite simple. As you can see in the video below, configuration is essential to adding backspin to your game. Take a look here:

Opening your club face and your posture is very important. After many years of practice, I understand this important setup position. It ensures clean contact with the ball and maximum time for the ball to roll up the clubface, creating backspin. The idea of rolling our wrists through the shot due to a closed grip is a little trickier.

Rolling the wrists has its advantages in this shot, but I would caution you not to be too handsy. Often we want to help the ball through contact and this attempt usually causes mishits or hits behind the ball. I learned, and still use, to keep my hands still while chipping. I like the feeling of less hand action through contact, but each player has to determine what works for their game. Either way, the above advice works.

If you want to put a little more action on your ball while chipping, try opening your club face and stance. This setup will allow more action on the ball. I will suggest that closing your grip may be a bit more problematic, but it’s not a showstopper. The next time you practice your short game, play with your stance, clubface and grip. You never know which combination of these skills will work best for your game.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
