Have you ever made a mistake in a match … then another … and suddenly you are terrified that the coach is about to replace you? I have often lived that situation in my professional career. That is why I show you the biggest mistakes in this message that almost guarantee a replacement – and more importantly, how you can avoid them so that you can stay on the field.
This is exactly what I help players in my Next-Gen Hitter program– Where I teach you to play with confidence, to avoid unnecessary substitutions and to become the hitter that your coach trusts. But now let’s dive into a number of practical tips.
Error #1 – repeated errors
Each coach can accept one or two errors. But three major mistakes in a row – three misses, three bad steps or three attacks – give a clear signal that something is wrong. I remember that I served two missed early in a set. My coach gave me another chance. I started serving for a risky jump … missed it … and immediately found me on the couch.
๐ Fix: Play safely after two errors. Put the ball in, get the rhythm back and rebuild trust.
Error #2 – Free ball errors
Nothing frustrates coaches more than messing up a free ball. If the opponent gives you a high, slow ball and you send it out – or worse, outside the borders – it looks like a lack of focus. Sometimes even a single mistake if it cost you your place.
๐ Fix: Treat every easy ball such as gold. Move your feet, put it in the middle of the field and show your coach that you are reliable.
Error #3 – Low energy / bad body language
Have you ever caught yourself walking the field without fire after an error? Coaches see it immediately. They want hunters – players who show passion and energy, no boredom or fear.
๐ Fix: Use body language as your weapon. Even if you are struggling, your hands, cheer, show the coach that you are ready for the next point.
Error #4 – Ignore or argue tactics
If you do not follow the team strategy – or worse, argue with the coach – you actually ask to become a bench. I have seen big players losing their place, not because of mistakes, but because they refused to play within the system.
๐ Fix: If you don’t agree, talk calmly after the game. Follow the plan 100%during the game.
Error #5-end of sets / tie-breaks
The closer the score, the less tolerance there is. In the last points of a set, even one or two errors can determine the outcome. Coaches need players they can rely on pressure moments.
๐ Fix: Play smart. Try not to be a hero on every ball – the player who keeps the team stable.
Positive closure
Here is the good news: one game can completely change the coach’s thoughts. A heavy excavation, a smart attack or a solid pass can immediately rebuild trust. That is why you have to warm up seriously, train with focus, and especially – don’t play afraid. Errors will happen. But if you keep energy high, limit large error stripes and show fights, your coach will keep you on the field.
