The company, which offers trading and execution services in commodities, securities and forex, has been importing gold into India through Dubai and GIFT City for two decades, but the new desk marks its first local trading presence.
The counter will mainly focus on Indian jewelers and expand services to scrap metal and recycling companies, Asia Pacific CEO Greg Kallinikos said in an interview on Thursday.
StoneX will hire operations and compliance teams in Mumbai and Bengaluru, including anti-money laundering specialists, and plans to eventually introduce financial derivatives in India.
Asia Pacific currently contributes about 20 percent of StoneX’s profits, but India could match the region’s entire share within a decade once all services are rolled out, Kallinikos said.
StoneX operates global capacity centers in Pune and Bengaluru with more than 600 employees performing functions such as software development and cybersecurity. Future hires will focus on automation and an integrated trading application for precious metals, commodities and equities.
The expansion reflects long-term plans rather than recent gains in gold and silver prices.
“We always had the ambition to come to India,” Kallinikos said, noting that this move was made possible by a broader technology footprint and a deeper understanding of the local ecosystem.
