Fans of Liverpool came to Anfield to pay tribute to Diogo Jota after the Portugal star died after a car accident in Spain early on Thursday morning

Steven Gerrard led the tribute to Diogo Jota, while Liverpool fans gathered in Anfield to express their respect after the devastating news of the death of the attacker.

Reports from Spain broke the news about Jota’s death on Thursday morning after a car accident. Liverpool later confirmed in an official club statement that Jota died at the age of 28 alongside his younger brother, Andre, 26.

Huldesten came in from all over the world for Jota, who came to Liverpool from Wolves in 2020.

And Gerrard was among them in the aftermath of the heartbreaking news. The former captain of Liverpool wrote: “Rip Diogo. Condolonces to his family and friends during this incredibly sad time.”

Darwin Nunez, Jota’s Liverpool teammate, also shared an emotional tribute to the Portugal International.

He posted photos of himself and Jota on Instagram with the message: “There are no words of comfort for so much pain.

‘I will always remember you with your smile, like a good companion on and next to the field.

“I send all my strength to his family, where he is, I am sure he will always be with you, especially his wife and three children.

“May he rest in peace. Diogo and Andre.”

While teammates and other football figures have taken social media, fans traveled from Liverpool to Anfield to leave a tribute for a player who was worshiped on Merseyside.

Steed John Wilson, 69, came to Anfield in his LFC Red Baseball -Pet with a friend after hearing the sad news. He said: “I was shocked. I was one of those players that you could not drop when he was on the field. We just wanted to express our respect to a big man and family man. His family will be so deeply sad.”

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has arrived in Anfield to pay tribute to Diogo Jota. She laid flowers and said her thoughts were with his family and children.

Manchester United fan Joe Parsons put his club scarf at the growing memorial for Jota while visiting with wife Kelly, a fan of Liverpool.

Joe, 40, said: “After I put down the scarf, it was amazing how much Liverpool -fans shake my hand. This is not about club -in -class, I had to show my respect. It is a loss for the entire city.

“I live in the city. I have also seen a tribute of Everton and Rangers. It is the football community that comes together.

“My wife is a fan of Liverpool. I received a message on my phone and turned on the TV. We were in shock. I feel sorry for his wife and children. It is devastating for them.”

Wife Kelly, 40, said: ‘I had to come. Liverpool is my religion. The boy was just married. My son is 22 and it reminds you that this could happen at any time.

“He was just too young. I have never known that a Liverpool player dies so young. It’s no age, that’s what hurts me.”

Denise Cook, 50, traveled three and a half miles on her mobility scooter to lay flowers.

She said: “I’ve been coming to Anfield for 50 years. I just felt in my heart that I had to come.

“Show some red to him and his young family. He was just just married and they are all so young. I feel for his family.”
