Steve Johnson tells tennis players what privilege they have amid offseason complaints

Steve Johnson says tennis doesn’t really have a true offseason, but there’s one thing other sports don’t have, and that’s the ability to take “mini breaks” throughout the year.

Players have long complained that tennis has an unforgiving calendar and that ending the season in November gives them little to no time to rest between seasons.

On the Nothing Major Show, Sam Querrey said he was “convinced” tennis wouldn’t even have an offseason anymore because December was full of exhibition tournaments. Johnson agreed, adding, “But in the tennis world, no, there’s not really an off-season, there’s a winter break. For us here in the States, you get a few weeks off and then you go back to training.”

Johnson: You can take mini breaks… Three to four weeks at a time

Johnson, who spent 12 years on Tour, fully agrees that players don’t have much time between seasons. However, the former four-time ATP champion does not see it as too big of a problem for one reason.

“Everyone has their own method for how much time they want to take off, what they want to do in the three or four weeks to get better, to get healthy. But there’s no offseason really, but guys can choose to play tournaments, you can take mini breaks throughout the year, you can take three, four weeks off at a time, it just depends on how you manage your schedules,” the former world number 21 added.

A practice tournament took place in Russia at the end of November, in which several well-known ATP and WTA players participated. A UTS event took place in London in early December. There have also been several practice tournaments in the United States. The World Tennis League will take place in India next week.

The start of the United Cup on January 2 also marks the start of the new season.
