Middlesbrough owner Steve Gibson will remain firm as Rob Edwards hunts for one of his stars in January, reports say Graeme Bailey via Molineux News.
Middlesbrough are looking for a new manager following the departure of Rob Edwards officially confirmed earlier this week.
After widespread speculation, the 42-year-old completed his move to Wolves. Edwards’ farewell message to Boro supporters did little to ease the frustration surrounding his departure after just 15 Championship games at the helm.
As January approaches, there’s a good chance Edwards will look to reunite himself with some of Boro’s stars. However, Middlesbrough owner Steve Gibson plans to reject any interest from Wolves Graeme Bailey via Molineux News.
With Wolves destined for relegation from the Premier League this season, they will likely spend January. All the money they spend doesn’t seem to be coming to Middlesbrough, even though they are interested in their players.
Which of Middlesbrough’s stars could Wolves be interested in?
Hayden Hackney is the obvious candidate to leave Middlesbrough in January. After Middlesbrough failed to gain promotion in the 2024/2025 season, many believed midfielder Hackney would definitely move on.
The England U21 international has long been touted for a move to the Premier League, with several top clubs showing interest. However, it was Championship rivals Ipswich Town who came closest to his signature this summer.
Hackney rejected the move, with a Premier League opportunity seemingly the only thing likely to lure him away from Teesside. There were also reports of an offer from Wolves, but Hackney ultimately stayed at Middlesbrough.
Another who may be on Wolves’ radar is Dael Fry. The defender is said to be admired by the Premier League side and it could be time for him to leave Boro.
Dael Fry’s career at Middlesbrough
When fit, Dael Fry has performed very consistently for Middlesbrough. The academy graduate has been a regular for the club since their relegation from the Premier League in 2017.
Middlesbrough last management
While Boro’s hunt for a new boss continues, there still doesn’t seem to be any name set to take over anytime soon. As Middlesbrough’s search continues, a number of interesting names have emerged.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has been linked with the position, despite his managerial career having stagnated since 2022. Raphael Wicky is also believed to be in line after turning down a move to West Brom last summer.
The links with Gary O’Neil and Steven Gerrard remain, but neither are likely at this stage. With Adi Viveash preparing for their next match against Oxford United, an appointment may not come anytime soon.
