Steve Garcia is eager to headline his first UFC card.
After Garcia defeated Calvin Kattar earlier this year, he called for a top-10 opponent and wanted a big name. Although he didn’t get a big name, Garcia will face David Onama in the main event of UFC Vegas 110.
“It doesn’t shock me,” Garcia said on Just Scrap Radio on BJPENN.com. “If you want someone a little bit higher in the rankings, I usually don’t get what I want… I was excited (but about the main event). They offered it to me and of course I wasn’t going to turn it down.”
Even though Garcia wanted a bigger name, getting the chance to headline a UFC card is surreal for him.
“That’s something surreal. I have a gym in my garage and I have all the posters on the wall from the events I’ve been to, and I always told my dad I would buy one with my face on it. Here we are. It’s a blessing,” Garcia added.
Steve Garcia, meanwhile, believes his UFC Vegas 110 main event against David Onama makes a lot of sense as they are in similar spots.
Garcia and Onama both haven’t gotten much buzz or respect in the division, so he expects them to put on a show for the fans.
“He’s a little bit like me; we don’t get a lot of attention, but we can scrap… I’m ready for anything,” Garcia said. “He likes to strike, he changes his position and tries to throw people out of their rhythm. I think he will respect my attack, but if not, I will adjust him and he will probably shoot. It is a big fight and I will prepare.”
Steve Garcia expects a violent fight at UFC Vegas 110
Although Steve Garcia knows David Onama will struggle, he is confident in his skills.
Garcia thinks it will be a bloody fight, but he expects his hand to be raised to show he is a real fighter. title candidate at featherweight.
“You’re in for a treat, that’s for sure,” Garcia added. “Anyone who wants to tune in, you’ve got two dogs willing to risk everything. It’s going to be bloody; it’s going to be a war. That’s what I’m planning, a five-round war. I don’t think it’ll last five rounds, but there’s the potential for it. If there’s a finish, it’ll be on my side.”
When Garcia raises his hand, he’s not sure what to expect.
“You can only hope, but knowing my luck, probably not. It doesn’t matter, I’ll pick them one by one, just be unmistakable,” Garcia concluded.
