The white smoke has not yet cleared in Kyle Tucker’s free agency.
But that didn’t stop Steve Cohen from setting social media on fire.
The Mets owner went to X on Thursday night, and while he didn’t mention the All-Star outfielder by name, he seemed to hint at it with a cryptic post.
“Let me know if you see smoke,” Cohen said, referring to the papal conclave where white smoke is sent from a chimney in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City when a new pope is elected to lead the Catholic Church, and black smoke when the new pope is not voted on.
Cohen followed up shortly after with another message, confirming that he was joking and had no prior knowledge of Tucker’s thought process.
“For those who don’t understand the reference to the papal election,” he wrote, “we are waiting for a decision. That’s all I know.”
Long considered the top bat in this free agent class, Tucker has three suitors in play for his services: the Blue Jays, Mets and Dodgers.
The Amazin’s, in their efforts to compete for his services, have offered Tucker a $50 million per season contract for four seasons. Mike Puma of The Post reported this on Thursday.
Toronto, on the other hand, has reportedly offered Tucker a longer contract, with ESPN’s Jeff Passan saying during a hit on Sportsnet on Wednesday night that the Blue Jays could “potentially” last 10 years.

Like many top prospects, the Dodgers remain lurking in case they see an opportunity to swoop in.
Tucker made the National League All-Star team in his lone season with the Cubs in 2025, hitting 22 home runs with an .841 OPS over 136 games.
Over his first seven seasons with the Astros, he posted a .274/.353/.516 slash line with 125 long balls.
He has been a Statcast darling throughout his playing career, ranking in the 98th percentile in chase percentage and 96th in walk percentage this past season. Impressively, his walk (87) and strikeout (88) totals were nearly identical.
