Ryan Gerard went all the way to Mauritius in December to try to get his ticket for the 2026 Masters.
Gerard lost in a playoff to Jayden Trey Schaper, but achieved his goal of finishing the 2025 calendar year in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking to secure a trip to Augusta National.
It was a successful trip to Mauritius for Gerard, but his autumn/winter odyssey to get into the top 50 cost him a real off-season. He took a few weeks off here and there, but arrived at the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club this week still feeling like it was 2025. All in all, that was a good thing for Gerard, who was sharp in Hawaii this week and enters Sunday’s final round three shots behind 54-hole leader Davis Riley.
“Anytime you can get competitive reps, it’s helpful to keep your game sharp,” Gerard said after shooting a two-under 68 in Saturday’s third round. “I’ve done my best to try to recover and do the things you have to do in the offseason. But just continuing to play tournaments like that, you can’t really have too much rust mentally when you come out here.”
“I know this is something I struggled with early last year, it was kind of stupid, silly mistakes that you make because you haven’t played tournament golf in a while. I’ve gotten a lot of them out of the way because I feel like I’m just still playing the 2025 season, it’s only 2026 now.”
Gerard will arrive in Waialae on Sunday to track down Riley and secure the first unopposed PGA Tour win of his career. Last season he won the 2025 Barracuda Championship.
He leaves at 5:45 PM ET with John Parry.
