Sport Ireland launches first-ever investigation into behavior towards sports officials

Clare Dowdall, Development Manager of Sport Ireland Officials, said: “The first step in our plan to transform and expand the role of officials in Irish sport was the launch of our Development Plan for Technical Officers 2025-2027. With this survey, we are now collecting information that can guide our next steps to create a safe, respectful; environment for technical officers and implement a national respect campaign. We are proud to take the lead in coordinating the first national approach to rebuild, support and protect the serving community.”

Completing the survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes.

It is open to players, coaches or spectators who have encountered a sports official during a competition/match during the past season.

Once completed, the research and stakeholder input will be developed into actionable insights to help develop a national respect campaign to address the issues raised by the Sport Ireland Respect the Officials working group.

About the survey

The answers to this survey are anonymous and confidential. All data is stored in accordance with GDPR principles. The survey contains some questions about behavior towards sports officials. This includes behaviors you have witnessed or demonstrated, and includes both negative behaviors (e.g., abuse) and positive behaviors (e.g., compliments, thanks).

To participate in this study you must be over 18 years old.

The research will be carried out by the University of Ulster.
