Spindleberry remains unbeaten over fences and has made Ireland’s trip to Doncaster worthwhile with victory in the Sky Sports Racing Yorkshire Silver Vase Mares’ Chase.
The seven-year-old was one of two runners for trainer Willie Mullins, and with stablemate Fun Fun Fun, ridden by her owners’ regular rider Bryony Frost, it was Danny Mullins who took on the ride on his second contender.
Spindleberry left the 6-5 favorite after four previous successes over fences, one of which was at Grade One level against geldings, and at Listed level against mares only she made easy work of proceedings to stroll to a six-and-a-half length triumph from Lucy Wadham’s Telepathique.
Danny Mullins said: “It’s just lucky that I get to ride her again.
“Plan A went out the window when the tires fell, but in the end we made it to the first and then rode by feel. Willie drilled that into all of us, felt the rhythm and kept going.
“She is a nice mare, lots of scope, canters strongly, but I thought they would gallop better today.
“She’s been up against geldings in Grade One’s in Ireland where we jump out and go, so she was keen enough to get to the first gate and Willie’s talk beforehand went out the window.
“A mare with her ability and strength, you just find a rhythm on her and let her find her way.
“I was happy to have Telepathique come around me and show me around most of the way and it went smoothly, another step towards hopefully bigger things.
“When she made that mistake (at the 10th obstacle) her concentration was 100 percent again.
“Just take her somewhere Paul Townend isn’t!”
