Spencer Strider starts against the Tigers on Sunday, while the Braves go for another sweep and their eighth consecutive victory, a remarkable wintreak at a time that it is important. Strider has had a mixed season, but has had a solid last two starts after a few struggles, although perhaps with a different model of success than we are used to from Spencer. His fastball use has taken a dip and he started to use his curveball and change meaningfully, a starting deviation of his earlier two-pitch approach. That change is the kind of things that make me believe in Strider as a very effective pitcher, despite potential loss in speed after his injuries. He is really a cerebral man and will work hard to maximize his effectiveness with all the tools he has available to him. Here is the hope that Sunday can be a different proof of that.
On the other hand, the Tigers start former number one General Pick Casey Mize. Now 28 years old, this has been the best season of Mize in the Majors, but it was a 2.1 Fwar season on 137.0 innings with a 3.97 XFIP. It is not really what the Tigers had hoped for MIZE when they generally took him number 1 in the 2018 design, but he has become a beautiful middle/back of the rotation starter in the Majors when he is healthy. He gets the job done by limiting walks and mixing an arsenal with five pitch with a large extension. It is not exactly an intimidating profile for a crime by Braves that has been better lately.
This is a very profitable game for Atlanta, but the great things to watch are strong versions of Strider to build some trust and Drake Baldwin to stimulate his Rookie of the Year opportunities.
