Driven by Ararat Reinsman Michael Bellman, Orch showed a lot of grit to remove Hertz Melton Maiden Pace – and Wallis to give his first training victory since 1997.

“He had raced well, but I just didn’t know what to say – I just beamed inside and I couldn’t get the big grin from my face. I still can’t believe I don’t think!” Said Wallis.

“Mick came back with the horse and he was just so excited.” We got there – I have one, “he said.

“Every victory is a good victory – but that horse has been a bit of a challenge, so it was a bit special.”

The victory came over the 48th start of ORCH, but it had inevitably looked his recent form. He noticed the attention in August with a narrow third in Ballarat and had since finished close-up in various runs.

Wallis said that patience had been the key.

“It was a bit of a long process with him. I breeding him and initially he was pretty pork head and he didn’t want to do the way I wanted to do them.

“So it took a while to settle in things. Then he seemed to go a bit sour in the world, and he did not always introduce. But he gradually comes around with time and he is now a nice horse to handle. He also starts racing a lot better. He wants to do it now.

“I think one of the biggest things that helped him have had no hard work between runs. If he racets, that is really his only fast work for the week, and it seems to want to do him when he reaches the races.”

Now withdrawn from his working life in demolition and siteworks, Wallis has been involved in the racing of Harnas for more than 40 years, starting under the guidance of the well-known Ballarat industry Stalwart Colin Holloway.

“I became a bit interested and started to go to Colin’s from one morning and he taught me the basic principles of how to make them and it went from there. I started possessing a share in a few or two with Colin and then trained myself,” Wallis said.

“I have never had my own place, just rented boxes. For a long time I was on the Ballarat Showgrounds – they had a Skillion Barn and I built four stables in it. I had a place near Bray Raceway for a few years, and now I am at Julian Jowe’s Stables in Ballarat North, what is great.

“I give Julian a hand with team and his young people, and I do mine and it works well.”

The last winner of Wallis came in July 1997 in Maryborough when he trained and wont fuel (Save Fuel). He judges the gelding, with six wins, as one of his best, but his peak remains aldepete, a mare racing and 11 victories in the 1980s, including three in Moonee Valley.

ORCH has added sentimental value, which is from the breeding mare, I am Glenda Lee, named in memory of Wallis’ deceased sister, who died tragically at only 33.

“So orch is quite special for me,” said Wallis.

‘I also breeding his younger brother, through For a reasonwho is an emerging two -year -old. He had a rough start with a bad foot injury, but I really like it. However, he will be my last horse. “

The victory with ORCH was part of a winning Treble of the popular freelance driver Bellman during the meeting. He was also successful with the Aaron Dunn trained few Artigas (Father Patrick) And pick up Elvis (Rock N Roll Heaven). The next night in Melton Bellman’s Run continued when he scored with Tictok (Love you) for Rebecca Morrissey.
