The South African women’s hockey team made the perfect start to their 2025 African Hockey Cup of Nations campaign, edging past hosts Egypt with an impressive 10-nil victory in Ismailia, Egypt, on October 12, 2025.

It was a memorable day for Caylin Maree, Jeanri Thomas and Ané Janse van Vuuren, who all earned their first senior international caps in green and gold.

South Africa wasted no time in asserting their authority and took the lead in the opening three minutes when Onthatile Zulu finished emphatically on the back foot after a sharp move from Taheera Augousti.

Just before the end of the first quarter, Ntsopa Mokoena doubled the lead and showed composure to round the goalkeeper and head home with ease.

The lead grew further in the second quarter when Hannah Pearce fired in a low drag move from a penalty corner to make it 3-0.

After a smooth passing exchange, Ongeziwe Mali received a precise ball from Maree, turned cleverly and finished with typical composure for the fourth.

Ongeziwe Mali scored in the second and third quarters to position the South African women's hockey team to continue their winning start to the 2025 African Hockey Cup of Nations with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Ghana in Ismailia, Egypt, on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. All photos: Jan van Zyl

The first half dominance was limited when Kayla de Waal converted after a dazzling run from Stephanie Botha to send South Africa 5-0 into half-time.

In the third quarter the home team dug deep to resist the South African pressure, but in the final phase the floodgates opened again.

Augousti reacted quickest to a rebound and put it in first, before adding another with a sharp reverse strike from an assist from Tegan Fourie.

De Waal added her second shortly afterwards to make it eight, Fourie got on the scoresheet herself with a thumping drag move and Zulu rounded off double figures with a brilliant finish from a tight angle.

It was a clinical, confident display from the reigning African champions, who now shift focus to Tuesday’s match with Ghana – a match that promises another tough test in their quest for continental glory.
