Son Heung-min has become one of the blockbuster moves of 2025 MLS season back in August, becoming the most expensive signing in the league’s history. With his departure out Tottenham Hotspur at that moment upcoming, the South Korean star now revealed why he chose to participate FC Los Angeles despite offers from the Premier League.
After receiving the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League trophy, Son decided to leave Tottenham after a decade at the north London club. While he was still playing a key role at the age of 33, questions soon arose over his future, with reported interest in maintaining his career in Europe, but the striker ultimately opted for a move to North America, a decision that sent shockwaves through the football world.
In the recently released documentary “Heung-Min Son: HomecomingOn Tottenham Hotspur’s YouTube channel, the star made a candid revelation about his decision:Evidently, I probably had a lot of options, but I definitely didn’t want to go to another one Premier League team, because I respect the club enormously. I never want to play against Spurs again.”
In the 14-minute video, which also chronicles Son’s final days as a Tottenham player, he made it clear that the bond he built since his arrival in 2015 played a decisive role in choosing his next destination as a professional footballer. “I’m only going to play for Spurs, I’m not going to play against Spurs”, he added.

Back at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after the 2025 MLS season, Son was also asked about his experiences at LAFC so far, and the star made a bold comparison: “I think it’s fair to say that in 2015 when I joined Spurs I was very excited and very happy. I think that kind of feeling when I moved to LA, I think it’s the same.

Reflecting on his last game in the Tottenham shirt, a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in his hometown, Son described the moment: “It was emotional. I never thought I’d cry so hard, but… no matter how much I thought about the past, the past decade, the ten years, I just regretted it and also felt very grateful. It was just everything, emotional about everything.
“I just couldn’t stop crying. I think it was just my emotions really, I showed everything. Like, how I felt…in an emotional waySon said. After being substituted in the second half, he received a guard of honor from teammates and opponents alike before sitting on the bench, unable to hold back his tears, ending a decade-long chapter, one he has said he would not change for anything.
