Snapchat brings Perplexity AI to Snapchatters’ inboxes

Snapchat is buying a ticket for the AI hype train from the company today announcing a new deal with Perplexity AI that will see Perplexity’s conversational chatbot is integrated into Snapchat, giving Snapchatters a new way to interact with AI tools.

Bewilderment is another variation of a ChatGPT-like interface, which allows you to ask questions to the chatbot and have it generate responses based on web resources.

Reviews suggest that Perplexity is better than ChatGPT for rresearch and accuracybecause of its focus as an ‘answer machine’. But essentially it’s the same concept, in a different form.

Bewilderment claims to answer more than 150 million questions every week.

And soon, Snapchatters will be able to ask questions to Perplexity AI in-stream, offering another way to find accurate, timely answers to various questions.

As explained by Snap:

“Starting in early 2026, Perplexity will appear in the popular chat interface for Snapchatters around the world. Through this integration, Perplexity’s AI-powered answer engine will allow Snapchatters to ask questions and get clear, conversational answers from verifiable sources, all within Snapchat.”

How does that differ from Snap’s ‘My AI’ chatbot, which is also available in the chat interface?

Interesting, said Snapchat’s Help Center:

“My AI is powered by major language models such as OpenAI’s GPT models and Google’s Gemini models and is trained on a wide range of texts, with additional security enhancements and controls unique to Snapchat.”

So theoretically, you can compare the answers from both AI tools in your Snap inbox by asking both the same question and seeing what they come up with. So again, reviews suggest that Perplexity is better for research, but if both this program and a GPT-powered AI bot are available, you don’t have to settle for either.

That is, of course, if My AI stays.

That will probably happen. Snap notes that both options will be available in the announcement, so it appears it plans to offer two AI chatbots in-stream. But on the other hand, with two AI chatbots and ‘sponsored snaps’ showing up in your Snap DMs, things can get a bit crowded, which may annoy some users.

But that seems to be what Snap is doing so far, and there’s a good reason why Snap wants to add Perplexity. Snapchat says Perplexity will pay for it $400 million to keep Perplexity appearing in Snapchatters’ inboxes for a year.

So yes, it may get busy, but at that price, Snap will solve that problem if it arises.

As noted, Snapchat says the Perplexity AI bot will become available on Snap sometime in the new year.
