The Cottagers looked to have saved themselves a point late at Old Trafford after drawing level after two goals.
A penalty from Raul Jimenez and Kevin’s goal in the 91st minute put Fulham level in stoppage time, after Manchester United had taken the lead through Casemiro and Matheus Cunha.
However, Benjamin Sesko struck deep into extra time to give the home side a third win in a row under interim manager Michael Carrick.
Smith Rowe lamented his side’s inability to hold on to a result and questioned the referees’ decision-making. Jorge Cuenca had a goal disallowed by VAR for Fulham, a decision that infuriated manager Marco Silva.
“Really frustrating. I thought the boys fought really hard today to get back into the game. It’s a bit annoying to concede straight after the equaliser,” Smith Rowe told Sky Sports.
“This is football. There’s not much we can do, all we can do is try to perform as best we can. It felt like some decisions didn’t go our way, but at the end of the day it’s football.”
“We want to do that every game. We want to compete, fight and put our best foot forward, both on and off the ball. I felt like we were a bit unlucky today. We still have a lot to play for. We are still in the cups and have had a good season so far.”
