Jon Rahm admitted that a signed glove felt a somewhat insufficient gift after he had hit a spectator with an incorrect shot during the third round of the US PGA championship.
Rahm’s drawn approach of the 11th hole at Quail Hollow seemed to touch a male viewer on the back of the head and recovered all over the green in the rough.
The man shrugged what looked like a pathogenic blow and shared a hug with Rahm after he had a signed glove at the former world number one.
“I am very impressed, I have to say,” Rahm said after completing a third round of 67 to go into battle to win the third stage of a career Grand Slam.
“After I got it and we saw the ball bouncing in … I haven’t seen a ball ricochet for a while. I mean, if it was a driver, you would expect it, but for a 6-iron I mean, that thing came aside quickly.
“I told (my Caddie) Adam (Hayes), well, prepare the Sharpie because I have to give it something, such as a signed glove.
“His answer was:” That may not be enough “. I have something like that:” I don’t know what else you want me to give him, “anyway.
“We sorted things a bit between golf clubs and golf balls. I don’t think a glove and a tee will cut it.
“He took it great. I told him, when he was European and grew up with football and he just a little better, maybe it would just get closer to the hole, but he took it great and he was a great sport about it.”
