Sidney Crosby passes Mario Lemieux for most points in Penguins franchise history – The Hockey Writers Pittsburgh Penguins Latest News, Analysis & More

eAnother game in the books and once again the conversation turns to Sidney Crosby and his achievements in hockey. On Tuesday night, in a 5-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks, Crosby scored his fourth goal of the season late in the second period. With that, he passed Mario Lemieux on the Pittsburgh Penguins’ all-time list for total points – both regular season and playoffs combined.

The goal, which gave the Penguins a 3–1 lead at the time, was Crosby’s 1,896th career point combined in the regular season and playoffs, passing Lemieux (1,895) for first place on the franchise’s all-time scoring list. It was also his eighth point in seven games this season, meaning he is well on his way to another season averaging one point per game – although there is still a lot of hockey to be played.

As for passing the legendary Lemieux, Crosby’s humility continued to pour out after reaching the franchise.

“It took me another 500 games” he said after the record-breaking evening. “It means I’ve been around for a long time, and numbers are numbers. But the memories and everything that has been a part of it over the last 21 years has been pretty special, so I appreciate that.”

Crosby later mentioned the incredible teammates he has had over the years, noting that it takes a lot to be able to play and remain as productive as he has been in his 21 seasons in the NHL.

“So yeah, I don’t know if I can put into words how much it means, but it means a lot,” Crosby said as he passed Lemieux.

Now that he has the franchise’s highest points total, Crosby will look to add even more big names to the NHL’s all-time regular season list over the course of the 2025-26 season. His next stop on that list is eighth place – currently held by Lemieux (1,723), while Crosby is just 28 points behind the NHL tie.

He’s also just five points shy of becoming just the ninth player in NHL history to reach 1,700 career points — a feat that could be accomplished next week.
