Former English opener has warned Shubman Gill about his batting errors for the England-India tests.
Shubman Gill has long been considered a generation talent. Dubbeds as the ‘Prince of Indian Cricket’, Gill was always advertised to become the mainstay in the Batting order. Now that Virat Kohli bends from the test format, he will probably also replace him by number four. Gill cannot be used in ODIs and the new Indian test captain showed his T20 thoroughness with an impeccable IPL 2025, where he scored 650 points on 155.87 (Sr).
What is Shubman Gill?
Having said all this, just like almost any other Slagman, Gill also has some mistakes in his game. He may have the most elegant drive and short arms in him, but Gill has to take care of his technical details on English soil that lateral movement to Bowlers. Former English opener Nick Knight has pointed out that the Gujarat Titans (GT) star must be wary of one thing: he is not too much about his front leg.
“Well, if I have been to India (for IPL commentary), I always emphasize the same thing, actually. Sometimes with Shubman, even more, if you have a little lack of trust and strive for things for your shape, that front leg sometimes just pushes a little too much about it,” said Nick Knight while he speaks with NDTV.
Knight further stated that placing your left leg over the body could hinder much more, especially against left -wing pacers trying to form it back. However, he also accepted that Gill has worked on the issue lately.
‘Therefore, the rotation of the body and access to the ball and playing that front cushion. But lately I have not seen that if I am brutally honest. But it becomes more important if you come over a left strener over the wicket and it waves it back in the pads. That is something he will probably always be aware of. That line outside Stomp will again be the challenge for all these top-order players, especially in England.‘
Shubman Gill -Testatistics
Category | Innings | Runs | HS | Average | SR | 100s |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Generally | 59 | 1893 | 128 | 35.05 | 59.92 | 5 |
Sena | 21 | 514 | 91 | 25.70 | 59.55 | 0 |
As can be seen on the table above, Gill still has to dominate in heavy Sena conditions. His average (35) lasts a huge drop of 10 points per match, and the 25-year-old also has to score a hundred. Apart from the habit of planting his left leg, as Knight said, Gill’s hard hands have also been his arch enemy. More often than not, he tries to hit the ball to get limits and uses the same power level to play a defense shot.
