Shreyas Iyer has given an encouraging update on his recovery after a serious spleen injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney.
The Indian vice-captain was briefly admitted to the ICU after the on-field incident. He thanked fans for their support and said he was “getting better every day” and greatly appreciated the messages and prayers he received.
The injury occurred when Iyer dove forward in an attempt to make a catch. A little later he complained of sharp pain and discomfort. His vital signs dropped shortly thereafter, prompting immediate medical attention and hospitalization.
Scans revealed a grade two splenic rupture with internal bleeding. Fortunately, the damage did not require surgery. According to the BCCI, his condition has since stabilized and he continues to respond well to treatment.
Despite the setback, fans and teammates have flooded social media with support for the middle-order batsman. Iyer remains optimistic and says about X:
āI am currently in the recovery process and getting better every day. I am very grateful for all the kind wishes and support I have received ā it really means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in mind,ā he wrote on X
Iyer’s recovery is being closely monitored by medical teams in both Sydney and India. Doctors have recommended six to 12 weeks of rest before resuming full training.
This timeline means Iyer will miss India’s upcoming ODI series against South Africa in November-December and may also be unavailable for the home series against New Zealand early next year. His participation in future competitions will depend on his rehabilitation progress.
