Shohei Ohtani open to play outfield for Dodgers in the late season

The Los Angeles Dodgers got a glimpse of the full potential that Shohei Ohtani can bring to the table on Tuesday evening.

There was never a question that the triple MVP would not be able to deliver sensational moments during his term of office in LA, but Ohtani threw five Hitless Innings against the Philadelphia Phillies and would later hit his 50th home run of the season to give a lead that was blown in the inning after he left the match.

After the game, Doug McKain from Dodgers Nations reported that Ohtani told Japanese media that he would be willing to change another position if it means that he would help his team win, and that would potentially play in the outfield to keep his bat in the game if he appeared relieved.

Back in Nippon Professional Baseball, Ohtani made 62 performances in the Outfield. As a member of the Los Angeles Angels, he made seven performances in the grass during the 2021 campaign.

“I have had several conversations with different people, and that subject has also been discussed,” said Ohtani in Japanese in a rough translation to English. “That applies to the hill, and possibly even the outfield. If I finally go as a reliever, then there may be situations in which I also have to defend in the outfield. So whatever situation occurs, I want to be sure that I am willing to deal with it.”

There have been a lot of whispering recently with regard to Ohtani who threw out of the Bullpen in October, and especially after what the bullpen did in response to the five no-hit innings of Ohtani, there is certainly a matter to be made.

When manager Dave Roberts was asked about the prospect of moving Ohtani to the outfield, he seemed receptive to the idea.

“He is a great teammate. He wants to help us win a championship,” said Roberts. “So I’m completely over.”
