The University of Michigan football program has had one of its most shocking days following the firing and subsequent arrest of its head coach. Sherron Moore.

The day began with the university announcing Moore’s resignation, confirmed after an internal investigation that revealed an “inappropriate relationship.”

Hours after the surprise firing, official records showed the former coach was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail.

Here are the details about Sherrone Moore’s run-in with the law.

Here’s what we know about Moore’s firing and incarceration.

Until Wednesday, Moore spent the past two seasons as head football coach at the University of Michigan.

Moore became the Wolverines’ head coach in 2024, replacing Jim Harbaugh after six years on the offensive team. He was the first black head coach in program history.

In 2023, Moore served twice as acting head coach while Harbaugh issued two separate sanctions: one for recruiting violations and another for the Connor Stalion sign-stealing scandal. He coached the final three games of that season, leading the Wolverines to victories against Penn State, Maryland and, spectacularly, No. 2 Ohio State.

Harbaugh returned for the postseason and Moore resumed his job as offensive coordinator, helping Michigan to the national title.

After Harbaugh left to take the job with the Los Angeles Chargers, Moore was named head coach, a historic moment. In 2024, the Wolverines pulled off another upset by beating Ohio State in the final game of the regular season and eventually beating Alabama in a game.

The university said in a statement Wednesday that an internal investigation found “credible evidence” that Moore “had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”

The sudden announcement indicated that Moore, who is married with three daughters, had been fired immediately and for cause.

“This behavior is a clear violation of university policy, and UM has a policy of zero tolerance for this type of behavior,” the statement said.

A spokesperson for the Michigan football team declined to comment Thursday to CNN Sports about the investigation, citing personal reasons.

News that Moore had clashed with police emerged Wednesday evening, just hours after his resignation was announced. ESPN reported that police in Saline, Michigan, helped investigators in Pittsfield Township — another community outside of Ann Arbor, home to the University of Michigan — by taking Moore into custody.

Police remained silent for hours about Moore’s interactions with law enforcement until Washtenaw County Jail records showed Moore was in custody at the jail.

Jail records did not list the charges against him, what his bail would be or when his first court appearance would take place.

CNN has attempted to contact Moore for comment.

In response to a request for information about the incident involving Moore, Pittsfield Township police sent a news release stating that officers responded to the 3000 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road to investigate an alleged assault.

Police confirmed that a suspect has been arrested and that the incident “does not appear to be random in nature.”

“At this time, the investigation remains ongoing. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation and its current status, we are prohibited from releasing any further details,” the Pittsfield Township Police statement read. “More details about the incident will be released as soon as possible.”

The statement did not specifically mention Moore.

Moore is expected to appear in court next Friday, according to police. At the hearing you will face a district magistrate and you will be informed of the charges and charges against you, you will be given the opportunity to plead guilty or not guilty and you will be informed of the amount of your bail.

It is also possible that Moore will be released without charges. Liz Mack, administrative assistant for the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office, said in a statement Thursday that the incident involving Moore remains the subject of an active investigation.

“We do not anticipate that charges will be filed or filed today. Mr. Moore remains in custody at the Washtenaw County Jail,” Mack said in an email.

“As this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further at this time, but our office will provide updated information once a charging decision has been made.”

Biff Poggi was named interim coach, the school said.

Moore’s firing comes just as college football’s coaching carousel has finally stopped turning.

Just three weeks into the season, Virginia Tech and UCLA fired their head coaches, kicking off a frenzy that included Lane Kiffin’s departure to LSU and Penn State’s chaotic attempt to replace James Franklin, who was fired on Oct. 12 after the once second-ranked Nittany Lions opened their season with disastrous losses to Oregon, UCLA and Northwestern.

Michigan is considered one of the top college football positions in the country, so athletics director Warde Manuel will have the top candidates to choose from, although it should be noted that many of them have already been selected.

Numerous head coaches, from Indiana’s Curt Cignetti to BYU’s Kalani Sitake, have accepted multi-year extensions after their names came up in other searches.

It is true that agreements can be broken, but with the opening of the portal scheduled for January 2, Manuel does not exactly have much time.

There is also a chance that if Manuel ends up with an acting coach, the domino effect will cause this carousel to spin like an unprecedented cyclone.

Moore led the Wolverines to a 9-3 record this season. The Wolverines face the University of Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
