Sheffield Utd Sack Wilder after the failure of the play-offs championship

Sheffield United has fired manager, Chris Wilder, after the club had not won a promotion through play-offs from the championship.

Wilder led the knives to a third placed finish in the regular season of the championship, but eventually missed promotion, after he had lost the play-off final to Sunderland due to a 2-1 result despite the first opener of Tyrese Campbell.

Club bosses have since held a thorough assessment of the season, where it was decided to dismiss Wilder and to go in a different direction under a new manager for next season.

In a short statement, the club confirmed that Wilder Plus are leaving its coaches, Alan Knill and Matt Prestridge ‘with the best wishes and gratitude of everyone connected to Sheffield United.’

United added that their owner, COH Sports, Wilder and his staff thanked for their services and their own appreciation will extend at a later time.

“Our owners, COH Sports, would like to describe our thanks to Chris and his staff for their efforts while they are at the helm and will extend their own appreciation in due course.”

Wilder has one rack In which he described his departure as a “big regret” and appealed to the fans when he admitted that he wanted the chance to bring the blades back to the Premier League.

“For the fans, I am clearly disappointed to leave, especially because we were so close to the return to the Premier League.

“I am through and through a sheffielder, I love this club and this city and that feeling will never change.

“I leave with a number of cherished memories and I feel proud to be spoken in the same way where special Sheffield United managers are remembered – leading this team more than 300 times will remain an incredible part of my life. This is a genuine thanks for all your support.”

This Stint marked Wilder’s second enchanting at the club-after in December 2023 for what was a period of 18 months-in which he had not kept the Blades in the Premier League at the end of 2023-24 season, before he led them to a meaningless promotion challenge in the championship.

Wilder previously spent five years the lead between 2016-2021 in which he led the knives to promotion from League One to championship in the 2016-17 season, followed by promotion back to the top two seasons later where they spent two seasons before degradation.

“It is with great regret that my time at Sheffield United has ended.

“I want to thank Stephen Bettis and Prince Abdullah for bringing the club back and giving the opportunity to rebuild the team and to bring this great club forward.

“I also want to thank all the staff of the club, everyone behind the scenes you don’t see often, and of course the players who have done a monumental effort last season, it was a pleasure to work with you, your desire and dedication was indisputable and I have no doubt that you will have great success in the future.

“For the fans, I am clearly disappointed to leave, especially because we were so close to the return to the Premier League.

“I am through and through a sheffielder, I love this club and this city and that feeling will never change.

“I leave with a number of cherished memories and I feel proud to talk about in the same way where special Sheffield United managers are remembered – leading this team more than 300 times will remain an incredible part of my life. This is a genuine thanks for all your support.

“Finally, I would like to wish Steven Rosen, Helmy Eltouky and the board the very best.

“Up the knives.”
