Sheffield United midfielder Tom Davies is out of contract at the end of the season.
Sheffield United have a big decision to make about the player’s long-term future. SUFC risks losing him for free in June 2026 as things stand.
Davis, 27, joined the Blades in 2023 following their promotion to the Premier League under former boss Paul Heckingbottom. He signed a three-year contract at Bramall Lane.
The Liverpoolan has since made 30 appearances for the South Yorkshire side in all competitions, five of which have appeared in the league this season. Championshipand he scored one goal. However, at this stage it remains to be seen whether he will remain in place beyond this season.
Davies rose through the academy at Everton and was a regular for the top club at various youth levels as a youngster. He went on to make 179 appearances for the first team, finding the net seven times, before being given the green light to head out the exit door and take on a new challenge.
When fit, he will give Sheffield United more competition and depth in the middle of the park. However, he has struggled with injury problems since his move.
Sheffield United must make Tom Davies’ decision
Sheffield United have included Davies in their last three games. He is a useful option for SUFC if he is injury free.
However, they will have to make a decision over the coming months whether to give him an extension. He competes with Gustavo Hamer, Djibril Soumare, Jairo Riedewald and Alex Matos, among others, for a place in their team.
However, the Blades signed him while they were in the Premier League, meaning his wages are likely to be on the high side. Letting him go for free when his contract expires would free up space and money.
Moreover, they do not know in which competition they will play next season. They are currently in the bottom three and if the unthinkable happens and they end up in League One, there is no way he will drop to that level.

What next for Sheffield United?
Sheffield United will consider what to do next with Davies in due course. In the meantime, SUFC’s focus will be on getting out of the relegation places.
They are back in action on Sunday afternoon with a trip to Hillsborough to play Sheffield Wednesday. The Blades are in the drop with the Owls and Norwich City.
Before the international break, Chris Wilder’s team drew 0-0 at home against QPR. Neither team managed to find a breakthrough.
